Ubasuteyama

Ubasuteyama is an installation inspired by a Japanese folktale about the abandonment of the elderly. A multitude of glass jars filled with colored water, moss, and tiny black silhouettes of old people evoke a delicate tension between reverence and neglect. The work reflects on contemporary attitudes toward aging, questioning how society values individuals once they are no longer “productive.”

Materials: Glass jars, water, pigment, moss, origami paper, miniature elder figure stickers on jars, internal LED lighting
Dimensions: approx. 250 × 170 cm
Year: 2024
